In our seventh year of participating in CANstruction, and responding to this year's theme of "CAN your imagination run wild?", we chose to represent a piece of fantastical, Victorian architecture.
We named our structure: “This World is but a CANvas to our imagination” which is a quote by Henry David Thoreau.
Throughout time architects and designers have allowed their imagination to run wild when designing new structures. Take for instance, the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, thought to be designed by a man named Heminunuor, or the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri designed by Eero Saarinen. These architects and engineers show us that through the use of imagination and a little ingenuity, anything you can imagine can be brought to life.
Modern technology has greatly increased our ability to break the boundaries on what is feasible. Our build this year illustrates the process by which an idea can be developed, manipulated, tweaked and eventually brought to fruition through the use of modern design and prototyping techniques like digital modelling and 3D printing. The sculpture design itself is a fantastical domed structure based on the Baroness Burdett Coutts Drinking Fountain in Victoria Park, London which was designed in 1862 by Victorian architect H.A. Darbyshire. The structure consists of a solid central pillar constructed of 618 cans of corn, surrounded by an octagonal rib-vaulted arcade using 252 cans of sweet potatoes, 306 cans of beans, and 696 cans of tuna, topped with a dome of 607 cans of tuna. Total, there are 2,479 cans used in this design. So you ask, CAN our imagination run wild? Indeed it CAN, and it’s what we do every day!
CANstruction is a national nonprofit organization that hosts annual design and build competitions for teams to construct structures and sculptures made entirely of canned food. The entries are judged in various categories, and, following a short public display period, are dismantled and donated to a local hunger relief organization. For the Cleveland-Akron CANstruction, all food will be donated to the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and the Greater Cleveland Food Bank.
