Lakewood Animal Shelter

A purpose-built shelter supporting animal care, staff well-being and adoption

Project Details

Collaboration

The City of Lakewood partnered with Domokur and Animal Arts to address the limitations of its existing shelter and align the new facility with standards used by the Association of Shelter Veterinarians. Working closely with the Lakewood Department of Public Works, the team organized the 3,557-square-foot building around intake, housing, medical treatment and adoption. Multiple material studies helped balance animal wellness, durability, sanitation and ease of maintenance.

Concept

Set near the Lakewood treatment plant and Rocky River, the shelter uses its landscape to create separation from nearby neighborhoods and soften views and sound. Trees along the north side screen the treatment plant while giving the dog areas the feel of a residential yard, helping animals transition toward a home environment.

Inside, a medical suite supports assessment and care, while animal-care and adoption spaces are grouped to welcome the public and make animals easy to observe. Office functions are separated for staff privacy. Carefully planned mechanical and sanitation systems, durable materials and acoustic insulation between the kennels and office and public areas support healthy, efficient daily operations.

Results

The completed shelter puts animal well-being at the center of the architecture and interior design. A raised roof and high windows bring extended natural light into the dog kennels and main lobby. Each animal enclosure connects to a corresponding exterior enclosure, giving animals access to varied indoor and outdoor environments. Together, improved daylight, sound control, veterinary care space and an adoption-focused layout create a healthier experience for animals, staff and visitors.
