Collaboration

The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District has provided benefits of flood reduction, conservation, and recreation since 1933. Pleasant Hill Lake Park includes an 850-acre lake surrounded by 1350 acres of rolling topography in Ashland and Richland counties, Ohio. The Park offers more than 400 campsites and cabins, more than 20 miles of trails for pedestrians and horse-riders, and an array of public amenities for overnight guests and day visitors. Streams, topography changes, and natural habitats provide activities for naturalists, adventurers, and wanderers.

In 2013, the District adopted a Master Plan to address major upgrades and deferred maintenance items at several of its parks. In 2015, we worked with the District to listen and help create an updated Master Plan and 30% Preliminary Design at Pleasant Hill Lake Park and Tappan Lake Park to meet their intent, objectives, and goals.

Concept

Our revised Master Plan used the entrance drive to split the park in two parts – an east side and west side. When fully implemented, both sides will have new and renovated RV campsite areas, all with full utility hook-ups. Additionally,  space on the east side was planned for a new pull-up tent campsite area and 34 new cabins of various sizes. At the center of the Park, the beach and Welcome Center act as a new destination area, complete with new pool, sprayground, shelters, mini-golf course, playground, ropes course, climbing wall, and zip lines.

Results

Construction will be phased over the next several years to minimize disruptions to campers. Since 2018, Domokur & Associates and the Design Team have helped implement nearly 200 premium RV sites, multiple toilet/showerhouses, shelters, multi-sport courts, playgrounds, green space and trails, and ten log cabins.
